Vibrations and shakiness can ruin your bike footage easily. In this video I am going to show you how to film a bike ride using the Insta360 One X. I have tried endless amounts of rigs and I have shortlisted my top 3 favourite ones. I am going to compare the Handle Bar Mount, Chest Mount, and Head Mount.

How To Film A Bike Ride With The Insta360 One X:

ALTERNATIVE INSTA360 ONE X HANDLE BAR MOUNT

I have made a smaller, cheaper handle bar mount using the Manfrotto Super Clamp + Manfrotto 037 Camera Mounting Stud + Sioti Tripod Ball Head.

Mount the Manfrotto Super Clamp onto the bike.

Place the Manfrotto 037 Camera Stud into the clamp, and tighten it into place.

Screw the SIOTI ball head into the Manfrotto 037 Camera Stud.

Finally, screw on the Insta360 One X onto the SIOTI ball head.

INSTA360 ONE X HANDLE BAR MOUNT

For this mount, I will be using the Manfrotto Super Clamp, Manfrotto Dado Tube Kit, and a Tripod Ball Head. These mounts are pretty expensive and may put you off buying them. I totally understand because I was the same! I was previously using the SmallRig Clamp, a much cheaper alternative. But this clamp broke whilst I was riding my bike. Luckily nothing happened to the camera. Now I will only use the most trustworthy rigs for peace of mind when filming on a bike.

Firstly I will grip the Manfrotto Super Clamp tightly onto the bike. There are several clamps on the market but the best one has to be the Manfrotto Super Clamp. The grip is the best in its class and I don’t need to worry about the camera falling off.

I then locked down a Manfrotto Dado Tube into the clamp. This will give me the ability to securely attach a Tripod Ball Head onto the rig.

The ball head will allow me to move the camera around to my desired position.

Finally, I attach the Insta360 One X to the Quick Release Plate and secure it onto the Tripod Ball Head.

I like this rig because I don’t have to wear the camera on myself. It makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. You get a nice view of where you are going but the bike doesn’t fall into shot. The biggest downside is the rig will absorb all the vibrations from the bike. It’s ok on smooth surfaces but if you go off road then I am sure the footage will become jerky.

Here is the result with the Handle Bar rig:

INSTA360 ONE X CHEST MOUNT

For this mount, I will be using the Amazon Basics Chest Mount Harness, and a Conversion Tripod Adapter.

It’s really secure as your arms go through the harnesses, and you can adjust the tightness really easily. You will need a Conversion Tripod Adapter to mount the One X’s 1/4″ screw mount to the GoPro Chest Harness Mount.

I then securely attached the Insta360 One X onto to this adapter.

It does feel really comfortable to wear. And I like the first person view of me riding a bike. However, my arm does fall into the stitch line when you look to the left or right, so I need to crop in the shot more than normal. It is also more difficult to reframe because my arms block the view.

INSTA360 ONE X HEAD MOUNT

For this mount, I will be using the Amazon Basics Head Mount, and a Conversion Tripod Adapter.

I like this rig because I can actually reframe and look around. I think this is definitely more stable than the Handle Bar rig. But because the One X is on your head, your head is now the camera. So if you turn around to check if anything is behind you, then that quick turn will be noticeable.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE FILMING ON A BIKE

There is no right or wrong answer here for the best rig, it just depends on your personal preference. I could of done some more things to make the footage more stable. I could of reduced the air in my tyres to make it less bumpy. I could make a smaller version of the Handle Bar Rig so there are less vibrations. I could ride my bike standing up a little so the vibrations from the bike doesn’t effect my body movements as such.

But that’s it! I hope you find this video useful. Let me know which rigs you are using the comments below. I am going to test out more rigs in the future so if I happen to find a better result, I will be sure to post a video.

I would love to see your creations, so please feel free to post your videos on the How To Make A Video Facebook Community. I am happy to help you and give you advice on your videos there.
