How To Colour Grade Insta360 One X Footage Fast:

HOW TO IMPORT INSV FILES INTO PREMIERE PRO CC 2019

The first thing I am going to do is import raw Insta360 One X footage (the INSV files) straight out of the camera into Premiere Pro CC 2019. I can do this because I installed the Premiere Pro integration during the installation of Insta360 Studio For One X. You have a checkbox here to make sure is selected.

Download the sample Insta360 One X footage used in this video. Go to the folder with your footage. Each video clip you record in 5.7K resolution will have 2 INSV files. One for front lens and one of back lens. Select one of each and drag the footage into Premiere Pro CC 2019. It will automatically stitch.

HOW TO COLOUR GRADE INSTA360 ONE X FOOTAGE IN PREMIERE PRO CC 2019

The method I am going to show you is specifically for footage shot with Log mode OFF. And I will show you why I prefer Log mode OFF oppose to Log mode ON later in this tutorial.

Drag this Kew Gardens footage (ending in 017) into your timeline. This footage was shot in 5.7K 30 fps mode, Manual ISO, Shutter Speed, and White Balance.

So how do we colour grade this? It looks a bit bland and I want the colours to pop out more. I’m going to apply the Insta360 One X LUT on this non log footage. To apply the One X LUT, click the drop down next to Import LUT. Browse.

LOG MODE ON VS LOG MODE OFF

Now let me show you why I prefer setting Log mode OFF oppose to log mode ON. I shot the same footage with Log mode ON to compare the difference. I made the Log mode ON footage look similar to the Log mode OFF footage by applying the One X LUT, bumping up the saturation to 150, and applying a basic S curve to get more contrast in the shot. Let’s compare these footage’s side by side when I zoom in 400%.

Log mode OFF footage looks nice and clean.

Log mode ON footage has some purple artefacts which I don’t like.

Let’s take a look at the grassy part of the footage. I personally prefer the green colour from the Log mode OFF footage oppose to the Log mode ON footage.

The only advantage that log mode on has over log mode off is better dynamic range.

Now this footage was taken before HDR Video was released. So in this scenario where there is high contrast, and the One X is still on the tripod, you are better off using HDR Video mode.

HOW TO COLOUR GRADE INSTA360 ONE X HDR VIDEO

I’m going to bring this footage into the timeline which was shot in HDR video mode. I didn’t change any of the default settings during filming apart from setting the White Balance to Fluorescent.

I’m going to apply the Insta360 One X LUT, and that’s it! It is colour graded! I cannot recommend HDR video enough. It’s simply amazing. Without HDR I would have to compromise either the outside being blown out or making the indoor part really dark.

If you want to you can make the footage lighter by lifting the shadows and the highlights.

Or you can increase the contrast by increasing the shadows.
